Riders from many backgrounds and from all age groups (20s to 70s) enjoy YJA trips. They all tend to have a few things in common: a thirst for riding and climbing, true sense of adventure, mature positive attitude and a friendly approach.
Yellow Jersey Adventures
Is a small independent outfit, created by Andy D’Agata, now based in the UK, having toured extensively in Europe and the USA. YJA was born in 1996 and came of age with Le Tour 2004. The first Alpine tour was a hugely successful, extreme cycling event for capable riders looking for a unique experience without breaking the bank. Le Tour 2005 followed in the same vein and 2006 will take us to the Pyrenees, offering another opportunity to really experience the Tour de France and take road riding to the limit.
Andy D’Agata
Background in aero engineering with experience running departments in large corporations. MBA with both the practical and administrative experience required to ensure YJA operates successful and satisfying ventures.
Tony Cosstick
Joined YJA in 2005, Tony has decades of serious cycling experience and years as a senior manager in the Public Service Sector. Having organised numerous biking and adventure events as a member of Hounslow and District Wheelers, Tony adds huge depth to Yellow Jersey Adventures.
YJA Philosophy: Tough Challenges – Good Company - Adventure
Serious riders relish a personal challenge, particularly if there’s chance to share the experience. This trip aims to offer something that would be difficult to do on your own, with the added benefit of a larger size group, at a price that won’t break the bank.
Think about the most memorable ride or trip you’ve ever done. Most likely it’s the one that challenged you the most, where you had to dig really deep in order to finish. In our experience the toughest adventures are the most memorable. Challenges that present the biggest physical and mental challenge live on in the memory to become legends that are seldom surpassed. A Yellow Jersey Adventures’ trip offers just that experience – it’s not for everyone.
The Approach – Professional Operation / No Frills
The tour 2007 is modelled on the world-famous ‘Supertour’, which has been operating on the West Coast USA for 25+ years. A low cost, down-to-earth trip where the main ingredients are fantastic roads, awesome climbs, and camaraderie of a friendly, like-minded group.
Let’s face it, riding your bike is free, what’s required is a scenic route, agreeable company, good food, hot showers and a comfortable place to sleep. Combine this with a truck to carry your gear, limited sag / mechanical support plus the opportunity to ride stages of the Tour de France, and you’re looking at a truly unique offering. It won’t be plush & luxurious, it will be well organised. It's important to remember as with all one-off events that push the envelope, expect to run into the odd additional ‘challenge’. Again, if you don’t consider these things all part of the adventure, then this is probably not your trip.
The Catch – You Gotta Pay
Whilst the trip is a commercial venture, anyone who has been close to this business knows that you can’t make a living on one trip per year (unless you charge $3,500 pppw) It’s designed to be cost effective so it’s not going to earn anyone big bucks. Modest profits, if realised, will do little more than cover time, risks and expenses of organising the trip. You pay: £749 / $1470 (£499 / $975 1-week)
What You Will Get – Value for Money
And here’s the bit you can really rely on. A professional service from YJA and a real adventure on some of the world’s most glorious cycling roads. A chance to share the challenge and outstanding scenery with a group of like-minded friendly riders. Reliable provision of food & facilities to keep you going and enough support to keep you out of real trouble. We make best efforts to ensure all campsites are comfortable with good facilities. How it will work
This is a fully mobile tour; in it’s true sense. The ‘Entourage’ will consist support vehicle for baggage, limited sag / mechanical assistance, and a catering team who will provide dinner each evening and hot breakfast each morning. All you do is ride your bike.
Accommodation
We will be camping (in your own tent). This is by far the most flexible option. As well as keeping costs down this allows us select the optimum routes and to travel as a large group. Campsites in France are of a very good standard, with adequate hot shower facilities to meet all our needs, space to prepare & serve food and generally hang out. Campsites will often have a café / bar and will normally be within 1km of town, where it will be possible to relax after the day’s riding.
Meals
Dinners and Breakfasts are provided, with the exception of the rest days where you will have the chance to sample the local fare. The catering team will make good use of local produce and meals will be tasty, nutritious, and plentiful, however please do not expect top notch gourmet French cuisine.
Support Van
There will be a minimum of 1 support vehicle with the purpose of carrying your gear. The van will carry some tools & spares (it’s a good idea to bring some of your own) and will have a limited ability to carry passengers, however it is not a full up sag vehicle. Riders are expected to be experienced and self sufficient on the road.
Bike Boxes / Bags
Storage facilities are provided at the start point where boxes and bags can be left safely for the duration of the trip. If you are taking the 1-Week option we will ensure bike boxes/bags are delivered to you for the end of your trip.
Riders
This tour is designed for serious (experienced and fit) cyclists who like challenging climbs and routes. The terrain is mountainous and riders will need the fitness to ride confidently and enjoy the route. The roads are usually well maintained; however good bike handling skills are necessary, especially for the descents. It’s expected that we’ll have riders between 20’s and 70’s couples and single men and women; you must be a least 18. Being a large group means we will not ride together, people go at a pace that suits them often in pairs or small groups. It’s not a race and whilst Tour des Cols 2007 is a huge challenge the aim is to enjoy the experience. This is a perfect way to meet others who enjoy your sport.
Getting There and Back
You will need to make your own way to Geneva airport for the start of the trip where there are good International flight connections. We will provide transfers from here to the starting campground on 25th Aug.
For 1-week riders a return transfer service will be provided on Mon 3rd Sep to Nimes Airport
For 2-week riders a transfer service will be provided on the afternoon of Sat 8th and morning on Sun 9th to Geneva Airport
